House of Anansi acts to create and promote events and spaces by Queer Indigenous, Black and Queer People of Colour that enable us to come together to share our stories. To create a space that is truly safe for all to be heard and respected. To celebrate who we are and empower our own community through connections.
How and why do we define as POC?
It is a solidarity definition, a commitment to work in collaboration with other oppressed people of color who have been minoritized. This is a term that has been created by Black and other minority women of color. See below for more on the history of the term POC.

The Inspiration Behind Our Name
House of Anansi is inspired by Anansi (/əˈnɑːnsi/ ə-NAHN-see), a folktale character first told in Ghana by the Ashanti people. Anansi often takes the shape of a spider and is considered to be the spirit of all knowledge of stories. In the Caribbean, Anansi is one of the most powerful folklore characters and is often celebrated as a symbol of resistance and survival. Anansi is able to turn the table on his powerful oppressors by using his cunning and trickery, inspiring strategies of resistance, the tales enabled enslaved Africans to establish a sense of continuity with their past and offered them the means to transform and assert their identity within the boundaries of captivity.
The character of the trickster, Anansi, is one that is found woven into the folklore and tales throughout many cultures and is known by many names from Indigenous, Africa, Caribbean and more. This commonality provides a basis for the creation of the House of Anansi.
